Royal Design Studio Stencil Review and Giveaway

What did y'all think of the Office Makeover last week?  We hope the project inspired you to take on a challenge and step out of your comfort zone.  This was the first stenciled wall we have completed and we can't tell you enough how easy it was.  The graphic design adds so much interest to the office and we love that it's an affordable project (albeit a little time consuming!).  Today we have some exciting news for our readers, we'll be giving away a Royal Design Studio Stencil to one of you (valued at $50 or less)!

The Royal Design Studios website offers a lot of great tips on how to use their stencils, but we wanted to share with you our Top 5 Tips for stenciling a wall.

5 Tips to a Stenciled Wall:

Tip 1: Start with the stencil in the center of the wall – You want to center your stencil in the very middle of the wall because this is where your eye will look when you walk into the room. If you start your stencil at one end of the wall you might end up cutting your stencil in half when you get to the other end of the wall. Plus, starting in the center of the wall will give your wall a more balanced look.

Tip 2: Use Adhesive Spray and Painters Tape – this will help the stencil stick to the wall and will prevent the paint from bleeding. We sprayed our stencil every other time we moved it to a new spot. You can use any adhesive spray you like but we do suggest using one that is light to medium strength – you want to be able to remove the stencil when you’re done painting.

Tip 3: Don’t be scared to cut your stencil – First, stencil the wall every where you can using the entire stencil. Save the areas (corners of the wall, around windows, floor, ceiling, etc) where you’ll need to bend the stencil or cut it until the very end. Then stencil the bigger awkward areas first and gradually move on to the smaller areas. The odds are you will never use this stencil again (I mean you can’t have two accent walls with the same stencil…right) so don’t be scared to cut your stencil to fit into those small awkward areas.

Tip 4: Don’t wash your stencil – if you are using the adhesive spray your stencil will get pretty sticky towards the end of the process. Do not try to wipe off the paint and adhesive spray with a damp cloth no matter how tempted you might be. We made this mistake and it created a huge sticky mess.

Tip 5: Your stencil color should be two shades lighter or darker than your base color – This will give you a nice contrast. One shade lighter or darker won’t make a huge impact. Trust us on this one – after you’ve spent hours stenciling your wall you’ll want it to make a big impact. If you use a completely different color for your stencil than your wall color then you can disregard this tip J

For the Office Makeover we chose the Elsabet Stencil from the Allover Modern Stencils Collection at Royal Design Studio. We used Royal Design's 3 inch large stencil brush to apply the accent color. For the paint we used Behr Premium Paint in an Eggshell Finish.  Royal Design Studio also offers crème paint for your stencil but we opted to keep the colors on our wall neutral...we can't wait to try the crème paint though! We really enjoyed working with Royal Design Studio's products and love how the stenciled wall turned out in the office! It took us about 1 day to complete the stencil on this wall. The process moves pretty quickly until you get to the edges of your wall or any awkward areas - this room has slanted ceilings which definitely challenged us. If you're not up for a challenge, we recommend picking a pretty square wall with very few windows or doors.
